We are currently soliciting ideas for future panel discussions, please contact adam.balukonis at aya.yale.edu with your suggestions or to learn more about how you can participate.

Yale SOMAA at the B-School Rowing Championships, Charles River.

22 April 2006

It was an unseasonably cool Saturday along the Charles River on April 22nd. Participants witnessed the Yale SOM women trounce rowing teams from Harvard Business School, Harvard Law School, MIT Sloan and Babson to clinch the B-School world championship cup. The novice boat aquitted themselves respectably, losing their leading position in the final stretch for a third place showing."

Reception with Dean Podolny

Tuesday, October 25, 2005

Almost 60 Boston-area SOM alumni braved a fierce northeaster to welcome SOMÕs new Dean to Boston. Rob Greenly, SOMAAÑBoston Chapter Chair, acknowledged the SOMAAÑBoston Steering Committee members in the audience and then introduced Dean Joel Podolny. The Dean spoke briefly, but eloquently about what struck him as compelling about SOM, the schoolÕs alumni, and his hopes and aspirations for the future. He referred to the SOM ÒAccountabilityÓ campaign launched in a recent Wall Street Journal ad as an example of expectations for SOM. He talked about the importance of fostering multi-discipline research and teaching and the great need for a new physical campus.

Part of the DeanÕs vision is to provide conduits for alumni to be actively involved with the school. Questions from alumni addressed steps taken toward curriculum reform, desired attributes for graduates, and different SOM academic centers. Mention was made of the inaugural class of the Executive MBA in Health Care and the importance of mixing academic rigor with pragmatic experience. Dean Podolny spent a great deal of time talking with various alumni before and after his talk.

Local Alumni News

SOM Alumnae Elected to School Committee in Both Cambridge and Newton Patty Nolan, '88 of Cambridge and Claire Sokoloff, Ph.D., '83 (and wife of Rob Gifford, '83) of Newton each earned the most votes in their respective elections for school committee.

As reported in the Cambridge Tab, "Another surprise came in the School Committee race. First-time candidate Patty Nolan topped the ticket, finishing ahead of all six incumbents. Nolan, 48, a self-employed small-business and nonprofit consultant, attributed her success to her campaign for a better allocation of the city's resources and school budget." As Patty stated on her campaign web page, "For many years I have been advocating a serious business approach to understanding, documenting, and developing a strategic plan to reverse our enrollment decline. The numbers simply donÕt point to inevitability... . Our schools can and should be at the forefront of environmental education, building, and programs. Our city has made a commitment to being a city supportive of environmental sustainability. But we have not done enough to have a culture of environmental responsibility." For more information about PattyÕs platform: http://www.rwinters.com/vote/nolan.htm

The Newton Tab reported, "In one of the most lop-sided victories, Claire Sokoloff defeated Andrew Gottlieb by more than a 2-to-1 margin. Sokoloff won 7,714 votes to Gottlieb's 3,369, and took all but two of the city's precincts. She also received more votes than any other candidate, except (Mayor) Cohen." As the Boston Globe reported, "Gottlieb was trounced by Sokoloff, who had the endorsement of every current School Committee member..."

Claire Sokoloff Ph.D. '83 (far left) debates two other candidates in the preliminary race for Newton School Committee. Sokoloff won by a two to one margin in the November election.

Patty Nolan '88, successful candidate for Cambridge School Committee. Nolan was the lead vote getter in her election.
